![]() The 2022-23 full Epic Pass, which grants passholders access to a total of 85 resorts, cost skiers $949. It now owns (or operates, in several cases) 38 resorts worldwide. In the decade and a half since, the company has extended its grasp. In 2008, Vail Resorts debuted the $579 Epic Pass – a single pass to ski resorts that offered owners unfettered access to the five resorts that the company owned at the time. The brothers’ father, Kingsbury “Pitch” Pitcher, invested in the resort in 1976 and eventually became the sole owner.Īs resorts around the country fall under the enterprising authority of multi-corporate alliances and buyouts, Wolf Creek Ski Area has not only resisted, but thrived.Īlthough no multi-resort passes will let you ride the lifts at Wolf Creek Ski Area, skiers and snowboarders from all over come to ski the area, which receives more snowfall annually than any other ski area in Colorado. Pitcher has officially held the title of CEO at Wolf Creek Ski Area since 2002, but had helped his older brother, Todd, manage the area for several years before that. “I can’t remember if we built this lift in 2012 or 2013,” Pitcher says as the chair scoops him up and carries him away from the legions of skiers who have come to visit Wolf Creek Ski Area one December day. On the slopes, he drops into gentle telemark turns with agility, but the twisting motion on the chairlift is more difficult for the 60-year-old after a paragliding crash in the spring that resulted in a broken back. WOLF CREEK SKI AREA – As he prepares to recline into the fast-approaching chair, Davey Pitcher cranes his neck attempting to read the numbers inscribed in the concrete foundation of the Treasure Stoke chairlift’s loading terminal. Keith is the son of Davy Pitcher, the CEO of Wolf Creek, and is taking over more of the daily operations of the ski area. In any case it's always good to have a backup plan and Purgatory is always an option.Keith Pitcher, assistant lift supervisor at Wolf Creek Ski Area, and his wife, Breanna, ski and ride Wednesday with their dogs Glacier and Couloir. We stayed a week and dealt with a huge snowstorm the first four days and could not get to the ski resort due to the pass being closed until the last two days of our stay!!! All locals said this was highly unusual and hasn't happened in years. Other activities we enjoyed in the area were x-country ski and snowshoeing. My only suggestions: If you are staying in Pagosa Springs, be sure to visit the hot springs AND be prepared to drive to Durgango Mountain/Purgatory if Wolf Creek Pass is closed.this will be your other relatively nearby option to do some skiing. My partner took beginner lessons and he was skiing greens pretty confidently for a first timer. The instructor was great and it really helped to brush up my skills. I took a group lesson and lucked out and ended up with a private two hour lesson. no excessive marketing of cars, skis, other junk. It is a family run area and has a nice non-commercial feel to it, i.e. Their quiche was pretty bad-greasy and heavy. The facilities are limited at this area and there are no on-site accommodations due to the remote location. There are also some pretty hairy backcountry areas that I might hit after I become more confident. I even skied some gladed areas (slowly!) The rentals my partner got seemed adequate. I'm an advanced intermediate skier and there was plenty to keep me happy. There is a nice range of trails and even a beginner can enjoy this mountain. The trails were incredible and there were plenty of non-groomed areas to allow for some fun in deep powder. tons of powder, no lift lines, very friendly staff Cons: no high-speed lifts, access to resort may be limited after heavy snowfall due to location on one side of a mountain pass I'm from the east coast and this was my first introduction to true powder skiing and it was awesome. AND THAT IS IF WEATHER PERMITS! BEWARE!!!!!! I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE! Have fun but be safe!! But.my biggest concerne as a parent of skiing children NO HOSPITAL NEAR!! IF SOMETHING HAPPENS SERIOUSLY TO YOU.YOU HAVE TO BE AIR LIFTED OUT. ![]() Check before you go to make sure there is alot of snow. I ski alot with my children, if my children were hurt skiing I would want a hospital closer than that!! There are no places to lodge close to the mountain, so you have to stay in either Pagosa Springs or South Fork area. ![]() The nearest hospital is in Durango which they told me was 80 miles away. I had thought I read where there was a doctor on sight but I never saw one. The ski patrol.in my opinion were not very knowledgable in assessing injuries. ![]() I hit a very icy patch caught the edge of my ski and fell. Locals claimed they won't ski until they get more snow! I figured out the hard way!! I am an average skier, nothing fancy!! We skied the Thumper trail which is a blue. ![]()
